Name: Cape Ann Brewing

Location: Gloucester, MA (pronounced ‘Glaw-stah’ if you are trying to imitate a Wahlberg).

History: Cape Ann Brewing opened its doors to the public in 2002, so it’s no stranger to the block. Cape Ann is a full-scale operation that is open 7 days a week for tours, tastings, and food. They also distribute to several states including Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and New York.

Recommended Brews: Cape Ann does a good job with low-alcohol offerings that don’t lack for taste. My two favorites are the Reel Easy, a NE-style session IPA that pares down the ABV but definitely brings you a nice, citrusy flavor profile, and the Eclipse, a Schwarzbier or ‘black beer’ that brings a malt-forward but easy-drinking approach. Both of these beers pair well with Cape Ann’s porch and harbor views. Recommended when it’s warm. You know, on account of the porch.
While you're in the area: If you’ve even heard of the movie The Perfect Storm, it’s worth spending a bit of time kicking around Gloucester and absorbing the local vibe. Gloucester functions as a tourist draw (with beaches, restaurants, shops, and some incredible cliffside mansions), while maintaining its dogged local flavor. It’s also home to a proud Italian festival that boasts the uniquely-named ‘Greasy Pole’ contest. On the way up, you can stop at a great old school candy house right off of Route 128, Nichols Candies.

Gloucester neighbors Rockport, a fantastic little seaside town that boasts a strong artist community, shops, and restaurants, and Essex, which is Antique & Clam Shack Central, in addition to being home to some great beaches. You can read more about that area in this article.
