Name: Somerville Brewing Company, AKA Slumbrew

Location: Somerville, MA

History: Slumbrew is quietly taking over Somerville.  This husband and wife team started brewing for the public in 2011, and operate out of 2 locations - a full brewery and taproom in the heart of Somerville, and a beer garden located just minutes from the Assembly Square T stop. They are also adding a 3rd location that will feature a full test kitchen, and currently distribute in 6 states.

Recommended Brews: I have already publicly stated that Slumbrew has perhaps the best Brown Ale I have ever tasted, the Attic & Eaves.  They also do quite a good job at a number of styles, and fly deceptively below the radar.  I loved the Beautiful Dreamer, not just because it might be a nod to one of my favorite bands of all time, but because a sour brown ale brewed with cherries and plums has my attention regardless of nomenclature. They also have a great, approachable Scotch Ale (sits right next to Brown and Red in the under-served styles category) and practice the art of winning with their Lobstah Killah Imperial Red.

While you're in the area: See link to my article about nearby Winter Hill Brewing Company here. Somerville has a lot to offer, from an eclectic range of restaurants and newer bars in trending Union Square, to the ever-changing myriad of options to capture the hearts and minds of a steady stream of young people in Davis Square.

There are also a few gems off the beaten path that are worth pointing out, especially if you like food as much as I do. For starters, there's Vinny's at Night, a small Italian grocery store that pulls back a curtain for dinner downstairs on a nightly basis.  Think vinegar peppers and rabbit stew. For authentic Mexican food, check out Tu Y Yo on the edge of Powderhouse Square. Get some stuffed poblano peppers and flan!
