Name: Start Line Brewing Company

Location: Hopkinton, MA. Where the Marathon begins.

History: Start Line Brewing is a new player to the booming MA beer scene, having just opened their doors in November. They share space with Water Fresh Farm, a specialty market place with a great selection of produce, beer & wine, meat, and cheeses. They also have great sandwiches, which you can order and bring over to enjoy at Start Line with your crazy-fresh beer. Start Line uses part of the farm space to grow their own hops, which is awesome. You can learn more about their Hydroponic Hops project here.  Husband and wife team Ted and Laurel Twinney, and head brewer Ty-juan Greene, are all incredibly friendly and enjoyable people to spend some time with.  I can’t wait to see this place in April!

Recommended Brews: I sampled a bit of everything on tap and there wasn’t a beer I didn’t enjoy on some level. The Hazelnut Stout was a standout beer for me, as smooth a beer as I can ever recall drinking. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Hop Load IPA, which head brewer Ty described as a mix of the West and East Coast styles: bit of dank juice on top, mild bitterness on the back. I approve.

While you're in the area: If you’re a runner (or just appreciate history), the official start line for the Boston Marathon is just a mile away. Hopkinton also has a state park for the nature-lover in your life.  What’s better before (or after) a few pints than a nice hike? Geographically, you’re close to Framingham and Worcester in either direction. My thoughts on Framingham are well documented. Worcester is home to Armsby Abbey, the best beer bar in all of Massachusetts.
