Name: Newburyport Brewing Company (NBPT)

Location: Newburyport, MA

History: NBPT has been around since 2012 to showcase three things: great beer, music (there is a stage in the taproom and they encourage local artists to come play), and the great town of Newburyport. The taproom is the kind of place where a day-tripper (or a regular) can happily idle away his hours chatting with locals and enjoying the influx of dogs. They also have foosball, and I'm a straight-up sucker for that.

Recommended Brews: I sat there on a gray Saturday afternoon and cranked out a few samples and pours and imagined how busy this place must get when the weather is warm - and not minding the temporary peace and quiet! I enjoyed the Das Kolsch, a nice daytime sipper, the Joppa Grande (1635 Series) Stout, and the Cask-Conditioned Habanero version of their flagship Greenhead IPA. I'm not typically a cask guy, but I thought it worked really well with the Amarillo and El Dorado hops, and the Habanero provided just a mild addition of heat.

While you're in the area: Newburyport is a little awesome. It's a seaside town with great shopping, restaurants, and happenings. Local food favorites include the Grog, Black Cow, and the Poynt. Check out Lexie's for a relaxed vibe and a great burger. There's a massive warehouse near the waterfront called Oldie's Marketplace, where you can spend some time dabbling in nautical-themed antique pieces, flags from all over the world, and an assortment of rocking chairs.

Drive over the bridge in one direction to Plum Island (stop at Bob Lobster on the way; yes, I love food). Check out some beaches and trees. Or keep heading north to Salisbury Beach and pop a squat on a nice stretch of sand, then head over to neighboring Seabrook and grab some of the best fried seafood on the MA/NH border at Brown's. Yes, more food.
