Name: Winter Hill Brewing

Location: Somerville, MA.

History: Winter Hill Brewing is grabbing dual SEO boosts by functioning as a coffee shop in the early hours, and switching over to beer when most people feel it’s acceptable to switch over to beer --- which is after your first coffee, if you’re asking me. You may not want to. Winter Hill is new, friendly, and subscribes to the Lex Luthor theory of real estate: Location! (not: kill Superman).

Recommended Brews: I posted up and and had most of what was available on the bright, post-blizzard afternoon when I visited.  My favorite was their flagship, the Darlin IPA, which has a nice floral approach and good, balanced bitterness.  The American Slumber brings some dankness: a threeway of Mosaic, Columbus and Simcoe hops.  I had a soft spot for the 328, a cream ale that serves as the Winter Hill Brewing house ale.  I don’t love cream ales; I don’t know anyone who does. However, I opt for them, when available, as a light alternative to session IPAs.

While you're in the area: Winter Hill’s location is primo, baby (I’m coining that, you can’t take it). Minutes from great breweries like Aeronaut Brewing, Slumbrew, and a plethora of beer bars/restaurants in Davis Square: Five Horses, Rosebud, Redbones, and Painted Burro (to name a few). It should be noted that Davis Square is perhaps my favorite area in all of Greater Boston.  A review for that entire area is undoubtedly forthcoming.

For all the non-drinkers (they exist): This part of Somerville is at best a 5 minute drive from the recently-overhauled Assembly Row, home to shopping, Legoland, an AMC Lux Theater (I saw Force Awakens there, so clearly it rocks), and some great restaurants like Southern Kin and Ernesto’s.  For anyone that has dabbled in Whitey Bulger lore, the name Winter Hill should sound familiar: Whitey was, at one time, the leader of the Winter Hill Gang, whose name originated from that neighborhood in Somerville where some of the original members were from. Thankfully, beers are flowing in place of bullets flying, these days.
