Name: Springdale Barrel Room

Location: Framingham, MA. The Beer Capital of Massachusetts.

History: Springdale Barrel Room is another newbie in the MA beer scene, but its parent company is a household name. While Jack’s Abby focuses on lagers, Springdale will be bringing the same quality and passion to crafting their ales - specifically IPAs and sours. I learned more about the souring process in one hour on a Friday night than I have in all the articles I’ve digested since kicking my habit up a notch. Thanks to Dave, our server, for being a most excellent host during our visit!

Recommended Brews: I sampled a nice range of sours and IPAs while there. My favorite, from the bucket of my favorite style, is the Good N’ You, a hazy, citrusy IPA. The plum-aged, Brett-finished Slanting Light was my favorite of the sours, although while there you have to try the Cerbeerus 5000, a sour red that is served directly from the barrel and has a nice taste of cherries. Where sours are concerned, Springdale might make a believer out of me.

While you're in the area: I’ve made my thoughts on Framingham well known. Two of the best breweries in the state occupy either the same building as Springdale, or occupy their old one. Additionally, there is a John Harvard’s location in Framingham, and that’s a great spot for beer and a bite. I recently took part in a blind beer tasting with a focus on NE Style IPAs, and John Harvard’s Brando took home the bronze medal! Look for juice bombs in all corners of the state, ye dedicated travelers.

For all the non-drinkers (they exist, often in the form of children), Framingham is smack in the middle of a shopping mecca that is shared by its neighbor, Natick. You can also skip over to Callahan State Park for some biking, hiking, or fishing (if only that rhymed). Round off your evening with some authentic Greek cuisine at the Aegean. Pass the lamb gyro and saganaki, please.
